Ann Fountain Dill

Tarboro - Ann Fountain Dill, age 94, died on Thursday, June 2, 2016, at The Fountains at the Albemarle. Born in Rocky Mount, NC on March 13, 1922, she was the daughter of the late former Lieutenant Governor Richard Tillman Fountain and Susan Rankin Fountain. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Susan Fountain Thurston; brother-in-laws, Dr. Thomas G. Thurston and John H. Paylor Jr.; sister-in-law, Katherine B. Fountain; and son-in-law, Randall W. Lee. Ann graduated from Peace College and then from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1943. She taught school in Carrboro, Washington, and Red Oak, North Carolina. She married Thomas G. Dill in 1944 and they lived in Greenville, North Carolina for two years where Thomas practiced law. In 1949, they returned to Rocky Mount where Tom practiced law and they reared their four children. Ann and Tom were happily married for 72 years. Ann was active in the community and served on the local school board for six years. She was a member of the Junior Guild and a past president of the Nash Committee of the Colonial Dames. Ann was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Rocky Mount and was elected as the first female Deacon in 1972. She and Tom were recently honored as 2016 Outstanding Older Adults by the Presbytery of New Hope. More than anything, she loved her family. She enjoyed playing bridge, following the stock market, collecting antiques, and spending the summers in Blowing Rock. Ann will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Ann leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband, Thomas G. Dill of Tarboro; sister, Margaret F. Paylor of Greenville, SC; brother, Richard T. Fountain Jr. of Rocky Mount; daughters, Ann D. Hamrick and husband, Dr. Alger V. Hamrick III, of Raleigh; Harriet D. Thorpe and husband, George W. Thorpe, of Rocky Mount; and Susan D. Lee of Tarboro; and son, Thomas G. Dill Jr. and wife, Ann D. Dill, of Rocky Mount. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Rebecca Hamrick Boone (Robert) of Winston-Salem; Ann F. Hamrick of Raleigh; Alger Vason Hamrick IV (Grace) of Raleigh; Sarah P. Barnhill (Austin) of Raleigh; Alexander D. Lee of Charlotte and Thomas G. Dill III of Rocky Mount; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, of whom she was very fond. The family will receive friends and family on Sunday, June 5, 2016, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the home of George and Harriet Thorpe. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, June 6, 2016, at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church of Rocky Mount, 153 N. Church Street, Rocky Mount. Visitation with the family will follow the service in the Lacy Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Rocky Mount, 153 N.
