William Charles Watson, better known as Chuck, passed away on June 19, 2024, at the age of 68. He was born on October 30, 1955, in Prince George’s County, Maryland, to Eldridge & Joanne Watson. Despite his Yankee origins, he was a southerner through and through.
Chuck was raised in Tarboro, NC. He was the oldest of four siblings, Mary Jo Hodge, Scott Watson (Beth), and Bobbie Byrum (Scottie), who have always been a part of his life and were there for him until death. He joined the United States Air Force following high school and was stationed in South Korea at the end of the Vietnam War, until he was honorably discharged.
Born with an innate curiosity for all things mechanical, Chuck discovered his passion for vehicles after leaving the service. He was a driver and part-owner of MadDog Racing and spent his career as a “jack-of-all-trades” in repairing all wheeled vehicles, large and small.
He married the love of his life, Donna Watson, who preceded him in death too early. He never stopped loving her. Chuck is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Adam & Katherine Watson, daughter and son-in-law, Shawn & Tommy Lewis , along with his step-daughters Kayla Cobb and Amanda Lawra. He leaves behind his grandchildren; Jonathan, Kristina (Matt), Eli, Leah & Zoe, and a great-grandchild, Mitchell. Despite his gruff exterior, Chuck’s grandchildren melted his heart. As he got older, he loved nothing more than taking the grandkids to “the Walmart” and spoiling them.
Chuck will always be remembered for the love and pride he found in his grandkids, the love for his family…and of course his Harley with the big loud pipes.
A Celebration of Chuck’s Life will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Rev. Tyler Moore officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.

I did not know “Chuck”, but my parents lived down the street from the Watsons for many years and I remember hearing about Mr. and Mrs. Watson’s children and grandchildren. I am sorry to read of the passing of “Chuck” and pray that all of the family will find peace and comfort now and in the days to come.
Mary Jo, Bobbie & Family: I didn’t know Chuck but I am sure he was such a blessing to the family. Having worked with y’all at the hospital, I know what kind and gentle souls y’all are and I am sure Chuck was one also. Praying for God to continue to hold you all in His loving arms and give you peace, comfort, and strength during this tremendous loss.
So sorry for your loss. Was a friend and coworker for many years. Prayers for all.
I worked with Chuck for many years at Concrete Services Company. Chuck had a great sense of humor and could take a ribbing as good as anyone else. And, he knew how to dish it out also. He was a great employee and was always available to get a job done quickly. My condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.
