Whitakers - Stephen Bailey Atwill, III, age 60, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2016. Born in Weldon, NC on May 24, 1956, he was preceded in death by his father, Stephen Bailey Atwill, Jr. Steve moved to Whitakers in 1975 where he lived until his death. He graduated from Enfield Academy in 1974 and later attended Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, where he graduated with a degree in Business. Steve had a deep love of the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer. He particularly enjoyed many years of playing golf at Hickory Meadows with friends he made there. The summers of his youth were spent with his family at Nags Head and later at Wrightsville Beach. With a deep love of his family, always supporting them in their lifes endeavors, Steves kind and gentle spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was especially admired for the tenacity, dedication and commitment that he demonstrated on a daily basis during his 27 year career with a single company, all hallmarks of an exceptional man striving to overcome the many obstacles in his life. Steve leaves behind to cherish his memory, his mother and step-father, Eva and Marvin Bradley of Whitakers; brother, Bill Atwill of Lynchburg, VA; sister, Eva Atwill Robbins and husband, Will, of Greensboro; and niece and nephew, Alice and Charlie Robbins. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Whitakers United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Whitakers United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home Cremation Services, 1130 N.   1. My heart is broken for you all!! Steve was always such a loving, kind and gentle soul. His memory will stay with so many forever. May God bring you comfort and peace knowing he is at peace now, I’m the loving arms of his heavenly Father.

  2. I worked with Steve for 21 years. Steve had a quiet strength and a dedicated man. I’ll miss him and it is my deepest desire that he is with the Lord Jesus.

  3. I worked with Steve at 1197. When I heard of his passing I was truly heartbroken. He was always very kind to me. When I was out for surgery on my hands, he saw me shopping and asked me when I was coming back. Steve you will forever be missed at 1197, the days just won’t be the same without your smiling face.   16. Steve always brighten my week by telling a funny joke or sending an E-mail. He was a very good and unique friend.

  17. Steve and I started our Walmart journey together in Sept.1989.. We worked together as stockers in candy and foods and then we went on to becoming unloaders on the night shift…I truly learned a lot from him. He was a smart guy with a good heart. My friend you will be missed. I love you. Rest easy.

  18. I started working at Walmart #1197 in 1993. Soon after I met Steve (Stevie as I called him). He was always kind and respectful. He was a sweetheart! He worked hard at whatever job he was given to do. After I left Walmart, I still did my grocery shopping there. Whenever I was nearby Stevie, I would have a chat with him and catch up. I usually hugged him before I left. He was one of 1197’s angels here on earth!! He will be sorely missed!!
