Phyllis Batchelor Matthews

May 6, 1956 ~ November 23, 2019

ROCKY MOUNT - Phyllis Batchelor Matthews, age 63, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2019. Born in Nash County, NC on May 6, 1956, she was the daughter of the late Octavious Talmadge "O.T." Batchelor, Jr. and Frances O. Batchelor. She was also preceded in death by her brother, David Martin Batchelor. Phyllis lived a full life as a wonderful mother, homemaker and a career in the insurance industry. She loved to cook and spend time with family and friends over shared meals. Gardening was also a passion. She had a great love for all animals, especially her cat, Lucy, and dog, Oscar. She was the most selfless and caring individual who would help others any way she could. Most of all she loved her family and instilled in her daughters' strong values that have served them well. Despite the devastating diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer, she always maintained a positive attitude and never complained. Throughout her battle, she was more concerned about the impact on her family than she was about herself; this is a testament to her selfless character. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. Phyllis leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughters, Amanda J. Matthews of Raleigh and Ashley Matthews Wilson and husband, Matthew, of Smithfield. She is also survived by brother, Lee Batchelor; sister, Ann Burnette and husband, Earl; and two nephews. A Celebration of Phyllis' Life will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Visitation with the family will be following the service until 4:30 PM in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home. A Private Family Burial of Cremains will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank Duke University Hospital Cancer Center and Liberty Hospice for their kindness, care and love. Flowers are welcome.
