Oliver D. Joyner

ROCKY MOUNT - Oliver D. Joyner, age 89, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2017. Born in Nash County, NC on April 29, 1927, he was the son of the late John Luther Joyner and Effie Mae Batts Joyner. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Geneva Beaman Joyner; daughter, Francie Smith; brothers, Nurney Joyner and Alton Joyner; and sisters, Reba Carpenter, Doris Poplin, and Judy Horchler. Oliver was a veteran of WWII, having served in the United States Army and stationed in Berlin. Following his service to his country, he went on to work and retire from Superior Cable. He was a loving husband, a wonderful father, and the best grandfather and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him. Oliver leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife, Ruth Scott Joyner; and son, Kenneth Joyner and wife, Judy, of Wilmington. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Deana Baker; and Wendy Ziegler and husband, Gerald; great-grandchildren, Samantha and Patrick Baker; Marissa Battle; and Enid Ziegler; step-sons, Randy Collier; and Dwight Collier and wife, Ella; son-in-law, Charles Smith; niece, Judy Cary Winstead; brothers, Delton Joyner and wife, Lois; and Chessell Joyner; sisters, Linda Tyson and husband, Wayne; Margie Joyner; and Velma Winstead and husband, Dixie Lee; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Mount Hermon Missionary Baptist Church, 5556 Bend of the River Road, Rocky Mount with the Rev. Justin Nale officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service.
