RED OAK - Myrtle King Bass, age 90, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 3, 2020 surrounded by her family and caregivers. Born in Nash County, NC on June 20, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Zack and Effie King. She was also preceded in death by the "love of her life", beloved husband, Ned Elgin Bass; sisters, Marie Mattus, Viola Hall, and Ruby Griffin; brothers, Vernon King and Clifton King; and sister-in-law, Lorene Wellman Bass.
Myrtle's life was filled with family, friends, love, laughter and enduring faith. She was a longtime member of Red Oak Baptist Church. She loved her Lord, her church and her family. Her children were her priority and her grandchildren, her joy. She was a member of a number of clubs and committees in the sweet community of Red Oak and served as a town commissioner for numerous years. Myrtle started working at Red Oak Elementary School once her children were grown and made lasting relationships with her students. She was an elite basketball player at Red Oak High School where she received an offer to play on the semi-pro team in Iowa. She considered and politely declined, as it was too far away from home and the people she loved.
Myrtle leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughter, Tonja Bass Whitley and husband, Phil, of Wendell; sons, Tim N. Bass and wife, Eva, of Red Oak; and son, Greg K. Bass and wife, Kim, of Red Oak. She is also survived by grandson, Tucker N. Bass of Red Oak; granddaughter, Brittany L. Bass and fianc, Matt Ard, of Red Oak; sisters, Edna Joyner of Greensboro, Lois Hudnell of FL, and Marvis Armstrong of Whitakers; and numerous cherished nieces and nephews.

During a family's time of loss, understandably family and friends would like to visit and express their sympathy. Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services asks that during this difficult time for the safety and well-being of the family, please keep touching and contact to a minimum. We ask if you have visited outside of the USA in the last two weeks or if you are experiencing cold or flu symptoms to please wait and visit with the family at a later time. You may contact the family by email, place an online condolence on our website or give the family a phone call. Again, we understand this is a difficult time but we encourage exhibiting safety and courtesy to everyone involved in these services. The mandate from Governor Cooper includes funerals, visitations and all services, so we must limit the attendance until further notice. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding during this unprecedented situation.
