ROCKY MOUNT - On February 13, 2019, Mike Unger, 69, passed away peacefully in Rocky Mount, NC. Mike was born in Pleasant City, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bertin Unger and Gladys Friel Unger.
Mike served four years in the US Army Corps and one tour during the Vietnam War. He also served six years in the US Marine Corps. As a veteran of the Vietnam War, he received the Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
After 30-years of service, Mike retired from the Defense Logistics Agency, a branch of the United States Department of Defense. Prior to retirement, he received top secret clearance to work on a special project at the Cheatham Annex Naval Base.
Mike always had a smile for a stranger and a hug for the ladies.
He is survived by his loving wife, of 36 years, Lu Unger. He is also survived by his extended family of several cousins and many dear friends.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 2:00 PM at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1217 Bethlehem Rd., Rocky Mount, NC 27803 with Rev. Laura Wittman officiating. Burial will follow the service at Pineview Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 12:30 PM to 1:45 PM prior to the service in the Sanctuary of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
The Family would like to thank Dr. Daniel Crocker, Sean Epps and their staff, Rev. Laura Wittman, and the nursing staff at Nash UNC Hospital for their compassionate care.
