ROCKY MOUNT - Lloyd Whitfield Bailey M.D. went peacefully to be with the Lord on August 12, 2020, with his wife and daughter, Joan, at his side. Dr. Bailey was the perfect Southern gentleman. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Clarence W. Bailey of Roper, North Carolina and Olive Magnusson Bailey of Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada. He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1949 where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. He received his M.D. degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1953 and served his internship there. Practicing briefly with his father in Rocky Mount, he was called to active duty and assigned to Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, then to Sembach and Ramstein Air Bases in Germany. As Flight Surgeon for the 12th Air Rescue Group, he covered Western Europe and North Africa. After discharge, he attended the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia.
He returned to Rocky Mount where he practiced ophthalmology. He was indebted to his office staff of Linda McDaniels, Ruth Creech and Karen Smith who were indispensable to his practice. In 2002, he closed his office to work two days a week with Medical Eye Associates. He was a staunch opponent of socialized medicine and provided care at no charge for patients unable to pay throughout his 54 years of practice with many rewarding him abundantly with homemade cakes, pies, ham biscuits and chicken salad. His patients knew they might wait to see Dr. Bailey but also knew they would not be rushed, would have all their questions answered, would have the best of care and might hear a joke before they left.
Dr. Bailey was a true patriot and a fierce defender of our civil liberties outlined in the Bill of Rights and the United States Constitution. In 1968, he drew national attention when as a Republican elector, he voted independently as allowed by law at that time. This rare action resulted in his testifying before the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary and his vote being upheld.
When not caring for patients, Dr. Bailey was happiest at the Alligator River Sporting Club cabin that he, his brother and friends built on pilings in the Alligator River, accessible only by boat. There he would make pancakes for his children in the shapes of the letters of their names and entertain friends who agreed that whatever happens at the Alligator River stays at the Alligator River. He enjoyed skiing in Europe and the States and traveling with his wife, Sarah and Whitfield, their beloved Jack Russell, across the United States and Canada. While at home, he would spend many hours doing yard work with a good portion of that time visiting with friends who were walking or driving by.
A man of strong faith, he was in Bible Study Fellowship and was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where he helped deliver Meals on Wheels. He was extremely proud of his childhood affiliation with Boy Scouts Troop 7, especially knowing that his old Troop still remained inside the church throughout the years.
He was a member of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Wills Eye Hospital Society, N.C. Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and the Nash County and N.C. Medical Societies. He was active in Ducks Unlimited and on the National Council of the John Birch Society.
Dr. Bailey is survived by his wife of 20 years, Sarah Patterson Bailey, and children, Lloyd W. Bailey, Jr., Linda Bailey Powers (Andrew), and Joan Lewis Bailey; grandchildren, Jack and Julianna Bailey; sister Anne Bailey Lewis (John) and was preceded in death by his parents; Jack Bailey, his brother and Anne Neal Bailey, his sister-in-law.
The family is forever grateful for the lifesaving care by Dr. William R. Deans of Boice Willis in 2013, the collaborative surgery by Dr. Michael Yeung and Dr. J. Larry Klein at UNC-Chapel Hill and the exceptional and compassionate care in the UNC-CH ICU and Anderson Pavilion extending Lloyd's quality of life. During his 92 years, he was blessed with wonderful doctors who were also close friends. Special appreciation is extended to Velma Evans and Sabrina Daniels, caregivers who have been like family, and to Nash Hospice.
The family hopes that each of Dr. Bailey's patients and friends can pause to remember times with him and regret we cannot gather at this time to share stories, especially those of his many pranks and the enjoyment he would have in pulling them off.
In lieu of flowers, Dr. Bailey suggested an act of kindness or time spent with another in need would be most meaningful.

Please accept our deepest condolences for your family’s loss.
Will always remember trips to the Alligator with Lloyd. He was one of the finest men I have ever known.
Had the privilege of workingknowing Dr. Bailey through his visits to the ER to see a patient. Always a nice, pleasant man, may he Rest In Peace! Sad news to see and will be sending up prayers for his loved ones.
In my 40 years of practicing medicine, I have never met a more genuine person than Lloyd Bailey. I am reminded of Nathanael in the Bible whom Jesus recognized as a man in whom there is no deceit having what Jesus called complete integrity. A wonderful human being, Lloyd had a terrific grasp of the world around him. We shared a concern for cultural decline that went beyond his concern for socialized medicine. It will be infinite fun spending eternity with Lloyd Bailey worshiping our Lord and Savior in Heaven.
Dr. Bailey was the best ophthalmologist ever! I can still see him darting hurriedly from one room to the next to serve his patients. He greeted you with a smile, asked how you were doing, and then gave you his undivided attention. He always liked it when I reminded him that I taught Lloyd, Jr., in 5th grade at Englewood School during my student teaching with Emily Henderson. He will always be remembered as a RM icon. I send my condolences to his family.
Spencer and I thought the world of Dr. Bailey and he and the other members of the John Birch Society spent many hours working to educate others. We need more men like him .
I am so deeply sorry for your loss he was an awesome man and an awesome doctor enjoyed working with him
Great man Will be missed
I am so sorry for your loss. I first went to Dr. Bailey when I was 4 and had cement thrown in my eyes. Except for the years I was in college in Virginia and the 10 years I lived in Charlotte, I always went to Dr. Bailey. More recently, I would see him at the YMCA. I never saw him come in that everyone in the building who saw him did not stop and speak. I think that is a great testament to what a wonderful man he was. He will be missed but certainly not forgotten. My prayers are with his family.
John and I will both miss Lloyd and his wonderful stories. Never without a smile, he could keep you thoroughly entertained. We loved seeing Lloyd when we came to NC to visit and getting his slant on politics. Even though we seldom agreed he always kept it friendly and fun. When you all came for Amy’s wedding, john really loved giving him the historic tour of Nashville and the Vanderbilt area. Their mutual love of history made it a memorable afternoon for all the guys packed into John’s car. Our hearts are breaking for you Sarah.
A good friend that I will miss. Fran & Watson Pugh
One of the best human beings I have ever met. The world is a little colder place without him. Godspeed Dr Bailey.
Oh such fond memories of Dr. Bailey being my doctor since I was a child. We all loved him. He was a wonderful person. Prayers for the family.
So sorry to hear of his passing. Sending prayers.
Dr Bailey was a wonderful eye doctor I always looked forward to my annual visit and reading the articles in his office about the bill of rights and our freedom. May have influenced I guess how I see the world today. Rest In Peace.

So sorry for your loss. Know you will have many fond memories.
I’m so sorry for your loss. He was my eye doctor when I was four years old until I became a young adult. He was such a nice person and very knowledgeable with his practice. If it wasn’t for him I probably would have significant vision loss.
Deepest sympathy and loving memories from the granddaughter of Dr Charles Richard and Virginia Reaves.
I missed him when he no longer looked at my eyes and now I’ll miss him even more. But he is in goon hands and will make sure God’s eye’s are working fine so he can keep a watchful eye on all of us.
Lloyd was a truly great man in every sense and a dear friend. I enjoyed every moment I spent with him. My sincerest condolences to Mrs. Bailey and his children.
Possibly the only person who understood me, politically. Dr. Bailey was a great man and servant of the Lord. While I already miss him, I am glad he will not have to watch the Woke generation destroy everything his generation (thanks, Dad!) worked so hard to build. See you soon!
Yes, Lloyd Bailey was an authentic Southern gentleman and a loyal and valued friend for more than 60 years. His integrity and unchanging conviction in what he believed and what was important were exceptional manifestations of character. Loyal and unchanging are my first adjectives to describe Lloyd. And yes, his sharp wit, one line jokes and mischievous smile will be long remembered. We don’t make many new old friends, and losing one like Lloyd is irreplaceable. As the last surviving member of the original Alligator Hilton, I retain many fond memories of countless experiences there among my dearest lifelong friends. To Sarah, Lloyd Jr., Joan, Linda and sister Anne, my heartfelt sympathy. You have lost a champion.
My Mom, Betty Ellis, went to school with Dr. Bailey and told some of the funniest stories of things he did! He was always my ophthalmologist until I moved from Rocky Mount. As a child I always loved to go see him. I remember him running from room to room! I also remember seeing his Father there. We have lost a great physician and man! I don’t think there will ever be another generation like his!
Dear Linda, Thinking of you and family and sending condolences on the passing of you dad. It made me think back to our Rocky Mount Academy days. Your dad had the best smile. Mom shared your Dad’s obituary with me. So sorry for your loss.
Dr.Bailey is a very special doctor indeed. I remember how his manner was always caring and he explained so much of all my questions. He was a man of God which you could tell in all he said and did with such dedication. My prayers are for all who loved him!!!
What a great man of integrity Lloyd was! He led a long and full life and touched so many people’s hearts. He will be greatly missed but also greatly remembered! Sarah, you have our heartfelt sympathy and prayers.
