Lila Harris Croom

May 6, 1923 ~ January 1, 2019

Lila Harris Croom, born on May 6, 1923 in Halifax County to William Timothy Harris and Myrtle Davis Harris, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, January 1, 2019. Her husband Donald Campbell Croom and her parents preceded her in death as did her sister, Faye DeLoatch, and her brothers, Billy and Ervin Harris. She also lost two granddaughters, Sherry Butler Liverman, Michelle Butler Craig and a great granddaughter, Collette Reittinger. Her survivors include her daughter Donna (Jim) Butler of Kernersville; sons, Richard (Wanda) Croom of Dobson and Wayne (Louise Ackerman) Croom of Oak Island; her grandchildren, Thomas Rhett Butler of Raleigh, Monique (Tyke) Farror of Virginia, Stephanie (Travis) Reittinger of Greensboro, and two great grandchildren, Megan and Andy Butler. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Lila grew up in Scotland Neck and moved to Rocky Mount while working for Abbott's Laboratories from which she retired. She attended Parkwood Baptist Church as long as her health permitted and was a member of the DMA group (Don't Mention Age) whose meetings and outings she thoroughly enjoyed. One of Lila's greatest pleasures was cruising in her red PT Cruiser. She would fill it with her older friends who no longer drove and off they would go to visit the homebound, go out to eat, go shopping or visit friends in nursing homes. She loved her church and church family and she loved sharing Jesus-she wanted all her family and friends to enjoy heaven along with her. Lila will be remembered as a "people" person who always shared her beautiful smile and talked with whomever she met, whether she knew them or not, whether in person or on her telephone. She truly never met a stranger and had lots of friends many of whom helped care for her, which enabled her to stay at home far longer than expected. Among those are Sheila Holmes, Inge Joyner, Carol Moon, Faye Taylor, Gail Joyner, Felicia Strickland, Emma Hammond and her Parkwood Baptist church family. The family would like to thank her friends and church family for loving her, visiting her, caring for her and for helping get her to all the many places that she needed and wanted to go. The family would also like to thank Dr. Jayesh Patel, Cardiologist, Dr. C. Stephen Powell, Vascular Surgeon, and Dr. Michelle Shiver, Primary Care, for their excellent care that extended Lila's life by many years and improved the quality of her life during those years. Special thanks go to Edgecombe Health and Rehab in Tarboro for the exceptional care given to Lila during her final days. A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Parkwood Baptist Church, 1731 Hunter Hill Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27804, with the Pastor John Scott officiating. Burial will follow the service at Sunnyside Cemetery in Scotland Neck. A visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM prior to the service in the Sanctuary of Parkwood Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that those who would like to remember or honor Lila to please do so in the form of a donation to Parkwood Baptist Church DMA, 1731 Hunter Hill Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
