John Robert Carstens Jr., age 77, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2015. He was born in Portsmouth, VA on March 11, 1937 to the late John Robert Carstens, Sr. and Elsie Irene See Carstens. Preceding him in death was his loving wife of 30 years, Thelma Gray Holloman Carstens and two brothers, Arthur B. Carstens and Theodore "Teddy" Carstens.
A true family man, John cared for and loved his wife from the moment their eyes met until the very end. His loyalty for his family was profoundly evident by the dedication he showed in everything he accomplished, his integrity, strength, fairness and honesty. He ensured his "ladies", Thelma his wife and Misty his grand-daughter, were always well taken care of. "Big John", as he was known amongst other carpenters and contractors, dedicated his life to building structures many to this day call home as both a master carpenter and at times as an independent contractor, being affiliated with Funtal Construction and others. At any given moment, he would point out his prized work, or past jobs, and share the rich history in such great detail. Whether on a job or relaxing with family, one would always know where he stood on any subject, and that he was right. A straight-shooter, Big John was man you could count on being by your side no matter what and his experience and knowledge was well-respected.
He leaves behind his son, Jeffrey Holloman of Nashville, NC; a granddaughter, Misty Proctor and her husband, Ernest, of Rocky Mount; and his two great grandchildren, Marlee Grey Proctor and Elijah Samuel Proctor both of Rocky Mount. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his two sisters, Priscilla Block and her husband, John, and Mary Souther and her husband Russell; one brother, Daniel Paul Carstens and his wife Donna; a special niece whom was by his side, Lorrie Elgin and her husband, Stephen; several nieces and nephews; and many close friends whom have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Big John.
The family wishes to express a sincere gratitude to Nash Healthcare Systems and South Village Nursing Center for their special care in taking care of John.
