Jimmy Ransom Journigan

April 8, 1947 ~ December 1, 2014

AVENTON - Jimmy Ransom Journigan, age 67, passed away on Monday, December 1, 2014. Born April 8, 1947, he was the son of Richard Sterling and Mary L. Saunders Journigan. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Sterling Journigan and his sister, Linda J. Faulkner. He was the third of four siblings and grew up on a farm in Aventon, fondly known as “Scuffle Town.” Some called him “Handsome Ransom”, his teammates called him “Biggun”, and his grandchildren called him “Papa.” Most everyone who knew him called him “Friend.” Ransom had a wonderful childhood surrounded by family, neighbors, and a constant flow of farm animals and dogs. He participated in the Livestock Show and Sale and won “Best Steer of Nash County in 1964.” Ransom loved sports and was named to the N.C. All East Basketball Conference Team in 1965. He graduated with Honors from N.C. State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agronomy (crop science and soil chemistry) while serving in the U.S. Army Reserve Unit. In 1969, Ransom married Dolores Fisher, moved into a little house on the farm, and had Allison and Jim. He entered into a farming and cattle producing partnership with his brother, Richard (Journigan Brothers Farm). To know Ransom was to understand his love for the conservation of the land, reforestation, and nature in general. At home he was a devoted husband and loving father. It was his example to his children to do as the Bible teaches about “being honest and being a good neighbor.” He said God blessed him with a good life. He now rests in the greenest of pastures. Ransom is survived by his wife of forty five years, Dolores; his daughter, Allison Jenkins and her husband, John; his son, Jim Journigan and wife, Rebecca. He is also survived by his three fine grandchildren, Madie, Fisher, and Sally. He is also survived by his mother, Mary L. Saunders Journigan, who is ninety-seven years old; two brothers, Richard Journigan and his wife, Linda and Neil Journigan and his wife, Kim, as well as many nieces and nephews. 2. I remember the first time I saw Ransom. He came to Grandma Fisher’s to pick up Dolores for a date, and I thought he was the cutest boy I’d ever seen. Of course, that would have put him on Dolores’ level. My family’s hearts and prayers go out to this special couple and their personal family. Linda Woodlief

  9. The first time I met Ransom at Fishing Creek Baptist Church and he smiled hello I thought he has the smile of an angel. I looked for that smile every time I saw him and it warmed my heart. When our daughter Heather went up to the greenhouse to help plant tobacco seeds, she came home full of great stories and mentioned how Ransom pulled some shenanigan or another and said that he was very funny. Ransom’s sweet nature and kind words made him forever a place in all our hearts. He will be sorely missed.
