Jerry Hampton Barnes

Rocky Mount - Jerry Hampton Barnes, age 66, was called home by his Lord and Savior on Monday night, January 4, 2016. Born in Hertford County, NC on December 7, 1949, he was the son of the late John Barnes and Christine Joyner Barnes. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Earl Barnes and his sister, Judy Jacocks. Jerry had many accommodations over the years, some of which were the Association of School Business Officials Award; (1996-2000); Governmental Finance Officers Award (1996-2000); Past NC State President of NCASBO (1996-1997); Charter Member of NCASBO; President, Vice-President and local Jaycee Chapter, Williamston, NC; and Jaycee Distinguished Service Award. He served on the board of the Eastern NC Vocational Rehab in Greenville; and was presently serving on the board of the Your Choice Pregnancy Resource Center. He served his country in the National Guard Administrative Unit in Rocky Mount (1971- 1977). Jerry had a long history with this community. He worked for Nash-Rocky Mount Schools in Nashville as Chief Finance Officer (October 1989-August 2000); Martin County Schools in Williamston as Chief Finance Officer (August 1976-September 1989); and since 2000, he owned his own business, Tax Accounting Practice (Barnes Tax Financial Services). Jerry was an active member of Englewood Baptist Church, serving as a Bible Fellowship Group teacher for over 25 years, deacon, and past Chairman of the Finance Committee. Jerry leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife, Pamela Stillman Barnes; his daughter, Emily Christine Sheets and her husband, Brian, of Mount Pleasant, SC; and his son, John Hampton Barnes and his wife, Jennifer, of Columbia, SC. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Roman Sheets, Rowan, Holland, and Shepherd Barnes. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 8, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Englewood Baptist Church, 1350 S. Winstead Ave., Rocky Mount, with Dr. Michael Cloer officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday, January 7, 2016 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home Cremation Services.   3. Pam, Emily, John and Family, I worked with Jerry throughout his career with the Nash County School System. A finer man I have never met. He was a wonderful colleague and friend. He was good at his job and always treated others with respect. The System did a great day’s work when we hired Jerry. I know he will be missed by everyone who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you go through this sad time in your lives. I shall always remember him with fondness and the deepest respect.   4. When God calls us home we are like a human caterpillar waiting to come out of our shell. When we make it to see Him we spread our wings like a new butterfly. I have had the please of knowing Mr. Barnes through NCASBO as well as working with Camden County Schools. He always shared a smile and a warm greeting whenever you saw him. May you find comfort during this time and know that he loved you all.

  6. We were shocked to hear of the passing of Jerry. He was a kind and loving person, he truly reflected the light and love of Christ Jesus to many. He was a great Sunday School teacher. We will miss the time we spent with him while he was preparing our taxes. We miss him so much already. We love you, Jerry. Pam we love you too, call if you need anything.. Amber and Bob

  8. Dear Pam and family, I am so sorry to read about Jerry! Of course my most memorable memory was of knowing him in high school and being such great pals. He certainly was a beautiful spirit and always had a powerful influence with his knowledge and smiles for everyone. God has certainly welcomed home one of his best earthly angels.
