ROCKY MOUNT - James Lynwood McCullen, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2017. A native and lifelong resident of Rocky Mount, NC, Lynwood was born on August 24, 1928, and was the son of the late E. B. McCullen and Maude Warren. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Brame McCullen, and his brother, James Lloyd McCullen.
Lynwood was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served in China following WWII. A staple of South Rocky Mount, he owned and operated McCullen Supermarket for many years prior to his retirement, always greeting his customers with his friendly smile. Both he and his late wife, Betty, were lifelong members of First United Methodist Church. Lynwood believed in giving back to his community and found his calling by volunteering for the Salvation Army. Lynwood was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a caring friend to many, he will be dearly missed.
Lynwood leaves behind to cherish his memory his son, William Lynwood and his wife, Sharon, of Wayne, PA; a grandson, William Christopher McCullen of Frankfurt, Germany; and a special friend, Jerry Lancaster of Rocky Mount.
A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Pineview Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives on Monday, May 29, 2017 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 100 S. Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.

I only knew the McCullen for a short time during their stay at Brookdale but I could tell they were very special people. Their smiles, their caring nature, their love for each other were all very obvious! They will be missed! I also saw a very caring and dedicated son! We can all learn by his example!
