James Douglas “Jim” Pittman, 55, passed away Friday morning, October 6, 2023, at his home in Rocky Mount. He was born on April 6, 1968, the son of Sheila Powell Martin and Thomas Lynn Pittman. Jim grew up in Portsmouth, VA, and graduated from Churchland High School in 1987. While in high school, Jim excelled in all sports, especially baseball. Jim was a 1992 graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan College, where he was a member of the 1989 DIII National Championship baseball team. In April of 1996, Jim married the former Janie Mac Dunn of Rocky Mount. In the fall of 1996, Jim, along with his business partners, started Premier Warehousing Services. Jim loved his Premier family and the many business relationships he developed. In the spring of 1997, Jim received the gift of life for a second time from his mother, Sheila, when she donated a kidney to him.
After receiving his transplant, Jim lived a full and active life. He had many passions. He was a scratch golfer, an avid hunter, and a wicked snowboarder. He loved sharing all of these things with his children, nephews and nieces, and dear friends. Jim also enjoyed a good glass of bourbon. Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Janie Mac Dunn Pittman, of the home; daughters Lindy Pittman of Boston, MA and Emory Pittman and son Jack Pittman of the home; mother, Sheila Powell Martin and husband Jim of Rocky Mount; father Tommy Pittman and wife Mona of Chesapeake, VA; sister Jan Powell Robillard and husband Andrew of Rocky Mount; mother-in-law Pattie Dunn of Rocky Mount; sister-in-law Genie Dunn Andracchio and husband Vince of Rocky Mount; nieces Ann Dunn Andracchio and Mary Douglas Robillard; nephews Tripp Andracchio, Brice Andracchio, and Will Robillard; and his cousin Doug Powell. Shelia, I am so sorry for the loss of your precious son, Jim. Thinking of you and your family during this sad time with love and prayers.
My condolences to the family. Jim was a fierce competitor on the golf course for sure. One of my most enduring golf memories was of playing a match against Jim and his partner in a tournament that I don’t exactly remember, but it was at Benvenue. I hit my second shot into the edge of the ditch on hole number three, which is a par five. I could still play the ball (I thought) and I entered the ditch and inadvertently moved the ball with my club and Jim rightly pointed out the penalty for that infraction, but I took a drop outside of the ditch and holed the next shot from about 100 yards out! Great man, great family. God bless.
Jim and I were always team-mates. From little league through high school, I spent many a game as his first baseman. Anytime someone got one I knew he was coming over and he was going to ‘bring’ it. Jim picking off the lead off batter late in the game in our District Championship against Western Branch totally changed the momentum and keyed our ultimate victory. Enjoyed sharing the dugout with him. Trey Rhodes
Hope this tree stands as tall as Jim did both on the mound and throughout his life

I am so sorry to see that Jim passed. I was one of his daughters (Lindy) softball coach. She was a great and had a never say die attitude when it came to softball. After speaking with Jim, it was very evident that Jim had passed down his competitive nature and never say die attitude to Lindy. Jim was just a great guy to be around and I know his zest for life with continue with his family. Prayers going up for your family and employees.
My sincere condolences to Janie Mac Pittman and the entire family in your time of bereavement. May God wrap you all in his loving arms and comfort you as only he can do. May he grant you all peace in your time of sorrow.
With deepest sympathy

Although we knew that Jim was gravely ill, Carla and I have just learned that Jim passed away a few weeks ago. Jim’s steadfastness in the face of health issues was extraordinary. Having spent a lot of time with him at Benvenue (and losing every time!), I last saw Jim when I travelled down from Toronto to play in the Pitt charity tournament a number of years ago. I can’t say that I ever met a nicer person. Janie Mac, we hope that your memories of a wonderful husband and father will help you to overcome grief. As his mother Sheila told us in a recent note, Jim is now at peace. This is all very sad, and we send our sincerest condolences to the family.
