RED OAK - Jacquelyn "Jackie" Saunders Griffin, age 87, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Breckenridge Retirement Center in Rocky Mount. Jackie endured a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Born in Nash County, NC, community of Aventon, on July 6, 1930, she was the daughter of the late John Andrew Saunders and Mary Mohorn Saunders. She was also preceded in death by her husband, M. George Griffin "the easiest man in the world to live with"; the premature death of daughter, Martha Ann Griffin Mears; brothers, John M. Saunders, William G. Saunders, both of Aventon, and Jim R. Saunders of Charlotte; sisters, Edna Albinson of Punta Gorda, FL, and Peggy S. Harris of Aventon.
Jackie graduated from Red Oak High School and completed a certification in Secretarial Science at East Carolina Teacher's College. She worked in a variety of secretarial and administrative positions beginning as the office secretary at Red Oak School and ending with Nash General Hospital, Admissions Department. When the size of George's farming operation expanded he asked Jackie if she would work by his side, which she gladly agreed to do. The were quite the team. Jackie was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and sister. When Jackie loved you, you were loved to the bone. She will be missed by legions of family, friends, her community, her church family and pretty much anyone who passed through her life.
Jackie leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughter, Peggy Griffin Doughtie and husband, John, of Bethel; and son, George Jeffrey Griffin and wife, Wendy, of Red Oak. She is also survived by grandchildren, Jessica Meares of Raleigh, Matt Griffin of Raleigh, Morgan Griffin of Red Oak; sister, Mary Louise Atkins of Aventon; brother, Ben M. Saunders of Burlington; sisters-in-law, Jane E. Saunders of Aventon, Lucy M. Saunders of Charlotte, Frances Hedgepeth of Nashville, Mary Jane May of Peachtree community; and many nieces and nephews, living and lost are all cherished.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Red Oak Baptist Church, 5515 Red Oak Road, Red Oak, with Rev. Rucker Burnette and Rev. Chris Fowler officiating. Burial will follow the service at Red Oak Baptist Church Cemetery. The Family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, June 1, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
The Family appreciates the loving care provided by the staff at Breckenridge Retirement Center and also Nash Health Care System Hospice & Palliative Care.
