BATTLEBORO – It is with great sadness that we must announce the passing of Gene Cockrell on March 6, 2023, at the age of 85. Gene was born on June 16, 1937, to his parents, Spencer and Wahlena Cockrell. Gene was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be deeply missed by all.
Gene began his professional baseball career after graduating from Cooper's High School and being drafted by the New York Giants. After many home-runs, some of which may have not yet landed, “Genie Boy” eventually hung up his cleats and returned home to Rocky Mount, NC to marry his high school sweetheart and embark on a new career. Gene Cockrell worked every day of his life; he believed this was the secret to a long and happy life. His dedication to his work was matched only by his devotion and love to his family. Gene and his son Darwin started Cockrell and Son Tree Service about 40 years ago. What started with one old yellow bucket truck held together with duct tape and zip ties has grown into a long convoy of vehicles. Whenever you see a Cockrell’s Tree Service vehicle, smile and say “I see you Gene!”
Gene was an honest Christian who treasured spending time with his loved ones. He will always be remembered for his infectious smile, his bright blue eyes, and his unwavering loyalty to his family and friends. He was a Giant amongst men and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Although he will be greatly missed, Gene's memory will live on through the countless lives he has changed. Until we all meet again.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jean Cockrell of Battleboro; his daughter, Tina Mayo and husband, Charlie; his son, Darwin Cockrell and wife, Brooke, all of Battleboro; his grandchildren, McKenzie and Madison Mayo and Chandler and Molly Cockrell, and siblings, Dot Farmer, Spencer Cockrell Jr., Donna Matthews, and Rick Cockrell.
A Funeral Service to celebrate Gene’s life will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Rev. Joe Price officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Gene was a fine man. He was always smiling and happy. I remember watching him play baseball, I believe it was a semi-pro baseball team. I wasn’t following him, but another player. They were a fun bunch of guys, and they were good too. He would have been in his late 20’s or early 30’s. I know all of you will miss him, but you can be sure he with Jesus and he is smiling.
To my bigger than life brother. May your “baby blues” continue to shine brightly as you play baseball in heaven. You are my hero. I will remember you with love and affection forever. Your Sister, Donna Matthews.

I met Mr. Gene & Mrs. Jean over 20 years ago as they visited to give an estimate here in Bunn. I immediately knew this was a special couple with a special family, like my parents. Mr. & Mrs. Cockrell followed through with professional service as great as anyone I’ve worked with. Way better than most. Thinned my old sick oaks to keep them living longer. 2 years ago Darwin & crew returned to take down a big one. Again with unmatched professional service. He proved the value of good parents. Not only did he perform top-notch, but as he was there I saw that his own family has as much love from him as he does from his parents. Wasn’t aware Gene played for NY Giants Baseball. I like baseball, but never had a favorite team. From now on the San Francisco Giants are my bb team.
