Elizabeth Tyler Strandberg

August 26, 1986 ~ August 22, 2015

Elizabeth Tyler Strandberg, 28, passed away August 22, 2015 in Jackson, Wyoming. Tyler was born in Rocky Mount on August 26, 1986, beloved daughter of Buckley Strandberg and Beth Gardner Strandberg, and sister of Josie Strandberg and Blair Strandberg Tomlinson and brother-in-law Buch Tomlinson, and her beloved dog and best friend Milly. Tyler is also survived by her grandparents, Jim and Marie Gardner, and Betsy Bulluck Strandberg, all of Rocky Mount; her aunt Terry Noble and her husband Billy, her cousins Will, Gardner and Marie Noble; her uncle Chris Gardner and his wife Stephanie, her cousins Carson, Allie and Christopher Gardner; her uncle Howard Strandberg and his wife Sharon, her cousins Wesley, Keller, Hunter, and Catharine Strandberg; her aunt Betsy Hackney and her husband Joe, her cousins Dan and Will Hackney; and her Godparents Steve and Lucy Wheeless and Missy Miller. She was preceded in death by her grandfather Howard Harold Strandberg, Jr. Tyler attended Rocky Mount Academy, where she was a state-ranked tennis player and graduated with honors. Born and bred a Tarheel, she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in psychology. During college she volunteered with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, spending her free time with her “little brother” Xavier. Always looking for her next adventure, she moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming after college, where she found her calling as a residential counselor for developmentally disabled children at C-V Ranch. Her unbridled athleticism, determination and service to other shined out West. She ranked first in the womens division of the 2010 Jackson Hole marathon. She competed in trail running competitions throughout the region and became a certified professional skier. In her free time, Tyler volunteered with the Jackson Hole Adaptive Sking Program to help disabled children learn to ski. Tyler inspired all of those around her with her mental and physical toughness. She ran, skied, biked and hiked nearly all of the terrain and jagged peaks of the Teton Mountain Range, rarely embarking on an adventure without the steadfast and loyal companionship of her beloved pug-labrador mix, Milly. No words can do justice to the spirit and fortitude Tyler brought to every single day of her life. She was selfless, intelligent, compassionate, unpredictable and fearless. Her laughter was contagious, unforgettable and heard often. She loved music, Nags Head, her family, Carolina basketball, the outdoors and her dear friends. She didnt know a stranger, saw the best in everyone, and was a loyal, devoted friend to many. With her courageous nature and soul, she embodied her favorite line from a song: “Id rather be a sparrow than a snail.” The family will receive guests at 520 Shady Circle Drive on Wednesday August 26, 2015 from 6 to 7:30 pm. A memorial service to celebrate Tylers life will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 301 South Circle Drive, Rocky Mount, NC on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at 11 am with Father George Greer Officiating. 21. To the Strandberg family I was so saddened to learn the news of Tyler’s passing. I have such fond, childhood memories of her — from Girl Scouts outings to sleepovers to Hanson singalongs in the Suburban to just riding our bikes for hours on end around Candlewood and Greystone. Tyler was compassionate, intelligent, resilient and loyal to her core — even at such a young age. I remember running into her at UNC several times and many years later and thinking she hadn’t changed a bit — she still embodied those same infectious qualities. And that laugh was unforgettable! My heart goes out to your family during this difficult time. I will forever cherish my memories of Tyler, and feel so privileged to have known her. With heartfelt sympathy, Sarah LeTrent
