Edwin Gorham “Red” Ward

ROCKY MOUNT - Edwin Gorham "Red" Ward, age 93, went to his Heavenly Home on Friday, September 25, 2020, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease at Brekenridge Retirement Center in Rocky Mount, NC. Born in Pitt County, NC on August 28, 1927, he was the son of the late Adolphus Ward and Lynda Leggett Ward, both of Pitt County. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Stancil Ward; his brothers, A.B. Ward, Jr. and Allen Ward; and his sisters, Clara Chauncey and Grace Weatherington. Ed served his country during active wartime in the United States Army Air Force from 1945 to 1948. He worked with the local Fire Department in his yearly years and was fondly remembered by his fellow fireman as "Red". He retired from the United States Postal Service in 1989. Ed loved going to his church, North Rocky Mount Church of God. He also loved to spend a beautiful day fishing and gardening, along with reading and listening to music. Ed is survived by his second wife, Linda Odom Overton Ward of Rocky Mount; his step-children, Jamie Overton and wife, Kim, and Lori Overton, all of Wilmington; and many special nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Pastor Jerome Mozingo officiating. Visitation with the family will follow the service until 12:30 PM in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home. A Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Pinewood Memorial Park in Greenville, NC. A special thank you to the wonderful care Ed received while staying at Brekenridge Retirement Center. Thank you also to Nash UNC Health Care Systems Hospice & Palliative Care for their care during the last few months of his life.
