RED OAK - Doris Rose Griffin, 85, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on March 9, 2014. She was born in Nash County on December 4, 1928, the daughter of the late Media David Rose and Lucy Williams Rose, and graduated from Red Oak High School in 1947. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Centell Griffin; brothers W. T. Rose, Junior Rose, and Alvin Rose; sister Alma Clarida; brothers-in law Robert Pierce, Jay Clarida, Bill Davis, Willie Ellis, and Roy Hedgepeth; sisters-in law Jean Rose, Ruth Rose, Leona Rose, Sybil Rose, Lois Hedgepeth, and Adele Griffin.
Throughout her entire life as a devoted Christian woman, she was a tireless advocate for our Lord and displayed her belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ to her children, her family, her church family and friends. She loved her family dearly, as well as Red Oak Baptist Church, its members, and this community.
A strong, independent woman and a very hard worker, she was also a fabulous cook. More often than not, her cakes, pies and desserts were purchased before the church and community bake sales even began. At family get-togethers, some of her brothers would grab her country ham biscuits before she could put them on the table. Many of you were very accustomed to seeing her on a regular basis working in the kitchen at Griffins prior to her illness.
She leaves to cherish her memory daughter Brenda Burns and husband Joe, son George William Griffin and wife Dianne, son Pat Griffin and wife Melinda, grandchildren Shannon Griffin Ellis, Michelle Griffin, Amanda Griffin, and Corbin Griffin; step-grandchildren Ashley Wilson and husband Drew, Dana Corbett and husband Brad, and Jake Brown; great grandchildren Madison Ellis, Kylie Wilson, Levi Corbett, and Paysen Brown; sisters Christine Pierce, Aileen Davis, Joyce Ellis, Helen Jones and husband Elbert Ray, Ann Varnell and husband W. C., Jr.; brothers Cliff Rose and wife Anise, A. J. Rose and wife Frances, Eugene Rose and wife Seleta, Ronald Rose and wife Verona; brother-in-law Otis Griffin; multiple nieces and nephews; and close family friends Kensey, Sue, Shane, Todd, Rebecca, Anna Brooks, and Tristan Murray.
A celebration of her life and visitation will be held at Red Oak Baptist Church on Friday, March 14th. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m., and the funeral service will be at 5:00 p.m., followed by burial in the Red Oak Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Wheeler Woodlief Funeral Home in Rocky Mount, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Red Oak Baptist Church Ramp Ministry.
The family would like to express special appreciation to Betsy Weaver, who lovingly helped care for Doris during the beginning years of her illness. Also, the family expresses its deepest gratitude to Mattie Davis, who lovingly cared for Doris for the last few years and as her illness progressed, and who was with her day and night, always making her quality of life as good as it could possibly be, up until she left this earth.

Please accept our deepest condolences for your family’s loss.
Doris, was a sweet lady, I enjoyed our time at NEW Academy at all sport games. I did not work with Doris when she worked at Abbott Lab but I would see her in the hall. I tested the product she help make. The family is in our prayers at this sad time. May God be with you all. Love, Tim & Lola

We had such a great time coming down and rabbit hunting. My father Bud Gay, loved visiting Doris and Centell and in later years Melinda and Pat. I remember the loving home and great food, not to mention all the fun we had. I’m so glad my father got to see Doris again before he passed at the Gay’s family reunion several years ago. Lots of great memories, and I will keep family and friends in my prayers. God Bless, Ron, Gay
May our heavenly Father give you the needed comfort & strength to continue, one day to the next. Until fullment of his kingdom promices. (Matt 610) At that time time he will replace all your tears of pain & sorrow, into tears of joy & happiness. (John 528, 29) My sincere sympathy.
