Donald Ray Pendergrass

DURHAM - Donald Ray Pendergrass, age 70, passed away on Monday, August 7, 2017. Born in Nash County, NC on January 13, 1947, he was the son of the late Herbert and Elizabeth Pendergrass of Castalia, NC. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bud Pendergrass; and sisters, Jane Robinson and Delbra Pendergrass. Donald and his wife, Sarah, made their home with their son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and April Pendergrass of Durham. Donald was a retired electrician and in later years did woodworking. Donald and his wife sold woodwork and baked goods at the Farmer's Market in Rocky Mount. Donald always fried apple and sweet potato jacks. Donald was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and husband, always called Papa by his grandsons. Donald will be truly missed by all who knew him. Donald leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife of 50 years, Sarah Perry Pendergrass; son, Tommy Pendergrass and wife, April; and daughter, Ronda Cowan and husband, Michael. He is also survived by four grandsons, Jordan Pendergrass, Jacob Pendergrass, Xavier Cowan, and Uriah Cowan; one great-grandson, Cedar Pendergrass; two brothers, Wayne Pendergrass of Castalia; Randy Pendergrass of KS; four sisters, Ora Lee Alford of Rocky Mount; Molly O'Neal of Wilson; Louise Wilson of Nashville; and Brenda Leonard of Castalia. A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, August 13, 2017 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Rev. Rick Clayton officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives on Saturday, August 12, 2017 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
