ROCKY MOUNT - On Friday, September 1, 2017, Dr. C. Dale Therrien reposed in the Lord at 81. Born in Coos Bay, OR on June 18, 1936, he was the son of the late Leo Ernest Therrien, Sr., and Helen Cobb Therrien. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Leo Ernest Therrien, Jr.
Although Dale suffered for several years from dementia, his family give thanks that by Gods grace he remained active for most of his life and then died peacefully in his own home. After military service, he did his undergraduate studies at St. Ambrose College, and then received his PhD in Botany from the University of Texas at Austin. He spent the next 32 years of his life teaching and doing research, first at the Pennsylvania State University and then as the chairman of math and science at Wesleyan College. In 1994, he was awarded the Jefferson Pilot Endowed Professorship in Biology. He retired from teaching in 1997. In 2006, he was received into the Catholic Church and was a parishioner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
Dale is survived by his wife Maryalyce Jean Therrien; his children from his first marriage: Marceline Therrien, and Philip Therrien, his wife Susan and their children Jake and Benjamin; and the children from his second marriage: Christopher Dale Therrien, and Mark Therrien and his wife Olena Gorbatenko.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 6 at 11:00 AM at OLPH Catholic Church, 331 Hammond Street, Rocky Mount, celebrated by Father Timothy Meares. Burial will be at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Scranton, PA at a later date. The family will receive friends and relatives on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at OLPH Catholic Church, with a Vigil Service at 7:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Brianna Marie McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship, c/o OLPH Catholic School, 328 Hammond Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
