Billy G. Hicks, Sr.

ROCKY MOUNT - Billy G. Hicks, Sr., age 78, passed away on Wednesday, January 16, 2019. Born in Nash County, NC on October 28, 1940, he was the son of the late Sam Alford Hicks and Jessie Wilson Garris Hicks. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Larry Alford Hicks. Billy was an insurance agent for over 50 years until his retirement as an Agency Recruiter. Prior to managing his own agency, he had worked for Coastal Plain Insurance for many years. Throughout his life, Billy could always find a diamond ballfield as he had an infinite love of the game. For many years he and his softball family of friends would enjoy inning after inning playing for the City of Rocky Mount Senior Softball League under the sponsorship of both his insurance agency, Billy G. Hicks Insurance, and of Agents Worksite Marketing Group. Through the love of baseball, many bonds and many memories were made. A dedicated husband to his wife Betsy, a caring and loving father to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and a good friend to many, Billy will be forever missed but never forgotten. Billy leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife of 59 years, Elizabeth "Betsy" Tilghman Hicks of Rocky Mount; son, Billy G. Hicks, Jr., and his wife, Albina, of Nashville; and daughter, Deborah H. Griffin and her husband, Kevin, of Rocky Mount; his grandchildren, Jason Griffin and wife, Chelsea, Sarah Griffin Blake and husband, Chad, Daniel Griffin and wife, Anna, Christopher Hicks and fianc, Stacy Ulbrich, Meagan Hicks Nabb and husband, Josh, and Heather Hicks Grimes and husband, Jesse; great-grandchildren, Jay and Tyler Griffin, Bradley, Abigail "Baby Doll", and Griffin Blake, Devon and Ellie Ulbrich, Violet, Cullen, and Carson Nabb, and Oliver Grimes. He is also survived by his brothers, Burnice Garris and wife, Lynda and Melvin Bess Hicks and wife, Linda; many nieces and nephews; and his best four-legged friend, Maggie. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Visitation with the family will be from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
