LITTLETON – Anthony “Tony” Leo Grantham.  Tony’s “long goodbye” ended when he entered Heaven on July 23, 2025, at the age of 78.  He was born in Sampson County, NC on February 13, 1947, he was the son of the late Leo Grantham and Alice Margaret Monk Grantham.

Tony was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.  He graduated from Roseboro-Salemburg High School and entered East Carolina University.  His education was interrupted by Uncle Sam’s call to service in Vietnam.  Tony proudly served with his mortar pit crew and later at Fort Bragg’s Womack Army Hospital.  After his service, he returned to complete his education at ECU.  In his spare time, Tony enjoyed his family.  He loved fishing, hunting, and gardening.  He was a volunteer with the Battleboro Volunteer Community Fire Department for 29 years and served as a member of their dive team.  Tony established and operated Grantham Appraisal and Realty Services for 45 years.  He served in the North Carolina Appraisal Institute in several capacities.

Tony leaves cherished memories to his wife of 57 years, Carolyn  Brantley Grantham; his daughter, Josie Grantham Jones (Artie) of Littleton; his grandson, Anthony Nelson Jones (Makayla) of Roanoke Rapids; his granddaughter, Brianna Jones (Logan) of Winterville; his sisters, Margaret Grantham Murphy of Cary and Debbie Grantham Jackson (Blake) of Newton Grove; his brothers, Rodney Grantham (Gail) of Clinton and Steve Grantham of Salemburg; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Tony’s Life will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Pastor Chris Snead officiating.  Visitation with the family will follow the service until 4:00 P.M. in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. The loss of a sibling is a pain few truly understand. I hope you know how deeply sorry I am and how much I care.
You and your family are in my thoughts. May HIS memory be a source of comfort, and may love continue to hold you up in the days ahead.

  2. Dear Carolyn & family,
I wanted to let you know that I love you and am praying for you!
    Always, Murirl

  3. I am fortunate to have known and cared for Tony. He was a jokester and loved putting a smile on your face. He talked fondly of his wife every day, reporting “She’s a good woman and puts up with my mess.” His concern for others was evident as he would always ask how I was, how I was feeling, how my family was, etc. Even though I was there to care for him, he cared for me too. Wishes of healing and love to his family.

  4. Carolyn and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Tony’s passing. I pray the Lord will give you the strength for the coming days and peace knowing that Tony is in His hands. God bless you!
    Sandra Pruden

  5. Our sympathy to the family. Anthony was a High School classmate of Mary. Roseboro-Salemburg High School Class of 1965. RIP

  6. He will be missed, he is part of a great family and I’m so proud to be a part of this family. Rest in heavenly peace my cousin 🙏

  7. I well remember Anthony as a playmate in the 50’s, playing in grandma’s house and back yard making a mess of things. My condolences to his family and the many cousins he left behind.

  8. I’ve not known Tony or Carolyn long. I go to church with Carolyn and she teaches our Sunday School class. I would see Carolyn and Tony at a restaurant, and it so warmed my heart to see them sharing a lunch together. If I beat them there I would offer to help Carolyn with Tony’s chair, and she humbly said I’ve got this. You could easily see the years of love shared between them, and showing faithfulness to Tony till he was called home. Praying for the family as you share memories and say goodbye. ❤️🙏🏻

  9. Farewell to my big brother, Tony Grantham.

There will be no more “big brother” on earth now that you are gone but you will not be forgotten.

I can visualize you going over the horizon to meet our lord and savior, Jesus Christ. All the Monk, and Grantham ancestors that have arrived before you stand at heaven’s gate to welcome you and to celebrate a life well lived. Your parents will be waiting in the front for you too!

You had a well rounded life too. You were a Christian, grew up farming, a college graduate, marriage to Carolyn, US Army Veteran, Father, Grandfather, Son, Grandchild, Brother Friend, Uncle, Cousin, and Father-in-law. You owned and ran a successful business and was a member of a Volunteer fire department to name a few. It’s been a wild and rewarding ride for you but you made it! I’m very proud of the man you were!

I’ll be seeing you in your new youthful body. No more pain and sickness. We’ll be new again. Until we meet again!!!

  10. I am sorry I didn’t know Tony but if he was anything like his sister Margaret he was a great guy. Thinking of each if you and praying for you

  11. Carolyn and family, I am so very sorry for the passing of Tony. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Josie and family. God comfort and give you peace now and in the days ahead.

  12. God bless Carolyn, her family, as well as Tony’s brothers and sisters and their families at this time.
As a first cousin of Tony’s, I saw him from the time he was born, at all the Monk reunions and at Meadow Restaurant most recently. He was always smiling with a twinkle in his eyes and joking around with everyone. Tony will be missed so much. Love you Tony.
With our sincerest sympathy and love.

  14. Sister Carolyn and Josie and all family members , we are so sorry for your loss. Brother Tony was a great guy , and a joy to be around! Always smiling or joking around when we ran across each others path . Praying for you all !

  15. I served almost an entire year with Tony as we were in the same squad in Vietnam, 1968-69. 2nd Battalion, 8th Cav, 1st Air Cav, Infantry. Tony was an excellent soldier, always cheerful even in very hazardous conditions. Of all the young men with whom I served, Tony was at the top of my list of those I liked and respected. I could always count on Tony to pull his weight. I will miss him, but I hope with all my heart I will meet him again in Heaven. We remained friends after Vietnam and stayed in touch for years. Rest in Peace old friend.
