Adelaide Giles Ward

ROCKY MOUNT - Adelaide Giles Ward, age 92, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at Breckenridge Retirement Center. Born in Lexington, Davidson County, NC on August 4, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Yates Giles and Madeline Charles Giles. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Sledge Ward, Sr.; her brothers, Thomas Gayle Giles and Charles Ogburn Giles. Adelaide was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College and was an Administrative Assistant for Congressman Harold D. Cooley in Washington, DC for many years. This led to her coming to Nashville where she met the love of her life, Raymond. They married in 1969 and shared 34 wonderful years together until his passing in 2003. She was a devoted Carolina Tar Heel fan. Adelaide is survived by her son, Raymond Sledge Ward, Jr. and wife, Ann, of Nashville and their daughter, Ashley Ward; her brother, John Burke Giles of Durham; and her special nieces, Brenda Giles Johnson, Ava Ward and Myra Vick. A Private Family Graveside Service will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery in Nashville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rock Creek Baptist Church, 1238 Rock Creek Drive, Nashville, NC 27856.
