Homer Smith, age 91, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, January 21, 2019. Born in Illinois on September 7, 1927, he was the son of Shirley and Ruth Smith.
Homer's wife of 67 years, Maxine, preceded him in death three years ago. He loved spending much time with his family, and leaves behind to cherish his memory daughter, Lynn Bruza and husband, Mike, of Beaumont, TX; son, Mark Smith and wife, Deena, of Wann, OK; and daughter, Mary Ellen Marshall and her husband, Jeff, of Rocky Mount, NC. He is also survived by grandchildren and their spouses: Chad Bruza (Joy), Andrew Bruza (Jessica), Philip Bruza (Katie), Jessica Arnold, Rebekah Hartman (Dayton), Nathan Marshall (April), Jordan Marshall (Brooke), and Josiah Marshall (Lauren); and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Homer was a man who lived his faith. He loved the Lord Jesus from an early age, bore witness to Him throughout his life, and followed him faithfully all his days. Homer was an engineer, who spent the majority of his career with Shell Oil. He was known for his brilliant, sharp mind, and kept it to the end. Homer was a wartime veteran of two wars, and fondly remembered his years in both the Army and Coast Guard. Homer was a fix-it-man, who loved to solve problems and tell stories. Homer was a man who loved, who was kind and gracious, who shared generously, who fulfilled his duty and who showed us how to live.
Homer lived many years in both Illinois and California. His last nearly nine years were in Rocky Mount, NC, where he made many new friends. He was a covenant member of Redeemer Church.
