Wendy R. Smith

April 21, 1963 ~ February 12, 2017

ROCKY MOUNT - Wendy R. Smith, age 53, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017. Born in High Point, NC on April 21, 1963, she was the daughter of the late Doyle and Janice Carter Smith. After receiving her Masters Degree from East Carolina University, Wendy went on to work for the City of Greenville as an Information Technology Specialist, a position she held for 12 years. She attended First United Methodist Church along with her husband Tom. Wendy was always known for her strong sense of humor as well as her dedication to helping others. She had a passion for helping others around her who were less fortunate, especially the homeless and neglected. Her most favorite past time was breeding and raising Hungarian Vizslas, more of a calling in which she enjoyed with her husband. Wendy always placed her family before all, a loving wife, caring mother, a special sister and a friend to all, she will be forever missed. Wendy leaves behind to cherish her memory, husband, Thomas Smith and son, Brandon Smith of Rocky Mount. She is also survived by sisters, Tracy Gurley of Austin, TX; Margie Desoto of Jacksonville, FL; and Mary Velasco of Oakland, CA. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home Cremation Services. Fellowship with the family will follow the services until 5:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 930 B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834, local homeless shelter or a charity of choice.   5. To Tom and family….As Janice’s Pastor, I was honored to be able to visit Wendy with her on one occasion and get to know her. So many of us were praying for Wendy as she struggled.   8. I’ll never forget the time she and I went inline skating when you guys lived on Ridgemeadow. She had never done it before and she kept on falling and we were both laughing so hard we couldn’t even skate. She was so much fun. When we would go purse shopping people would comment on how much fun we had together. I am going to miss her so much. There isn’t anyone else in the world like Wendy. She was always so generous she made me a better person. I am so grateful for her friendship. Lynne

  10. I am so saddened by her loss! I retired from the City of Greenville five years ago and Mrs. Wendy was truly a ray of sunshine and my life is better thanks to knowing her. Heaven definitely has another angel. Mrs. Wendy will truly be missed and leaves a void that will never be filled. We’ll be praying for the family!

Some of my fondest memories are of the times we shared together at Abbott and later when we all lived in Clayton and worked. at Novo. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.   13. Tom, I am so sorry for your tremendous loss. I remember Wendy from day one at Abbott. How many decades ago was that The only time I ever saw her without a smile on her face was when she had to do a deviation! She always seemed happy and to my knowledge, or at least to the outside world, she was just someone you wanted to be around. She was such a fun-loving spirit, and we laughed so much at so many things. Many times we had to go behind closed doors. She could maintain a lot better than me if we got tickled about something. I wish that I had kept up with you two more, but somehow life gets in the way of what is truly important. I am sending prayers for His guidance, love, and support for you.
