Dorothy Irene Brown

DORTCHES - Dorothy Irene Brown, 98, passed away Monday, May 24, 2010. She was born October 19, 1911 in Nash County, daughter of the late Berry Robert Brown and Martha Etta Boseman Brown. She was also preceded in death by her eight brothers, George Brown, Matthew Brown, Robert Brown, Johnny Brown, T.O. “Offie” Brown, James Brown, Edmond Brown and Marvin Brown. Irene Brown graduated from Women's College in Greensboro (today UNC-G) and received a bachelor's degree. She received the Distinguished Service Award, a national award, at the National Home Demonstration Agents Association conference. She was the first assistant home agent employed in the state. She was the first and only home demonstration agent employed in Yadkin County. She developed the entire extension program for the 4-H girls and women in her county. She served in Yadkin County for 30 years. Irene was also a home demonstration agent in Johnston County. Irene said her family gave her the grassroots experience for her beloved career. She loved to knit, to cook, and to grow roses. She leaves to cherish her memory, her extended family of nieces and nephews. A service to remember Irene will be held at 11:00a.m. Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at Dortches Baptist Church with Rev. Grady Dickens and Rev. Stanley Brown officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery.
