Bobbie Sue Lowery Smith, 68, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2011 surrounded by her loving family. Born April 23, 1943, she was the daughter of Dot Lowery Collins of Concord and the late James Palmer Lowery.
Major Bobbie Sue Smith was born in Charlotte NC and introduced to the Salvation Army when she attended Bible School at the age of 10. She became active in the Corps and in 1957, at the age of 12 years old, she was converted. From that time until 1961, she grew spiritually and prepared herself for officership. Bobbie Sue entered the School of Officers Training in 1961 and was ordained and commissioned in 1963.
When she was commissioned, she was appointed to serve in Charleston SC. She served there for a short time before being transferred to Anderson SC to serve as youth officer. It was in Anderson that God brought her and her future husband, Al, together. There is no doubt that God ordained their meeting. A year after they met they were married and then Al entered the School of Officers Training.
After eight years of marriage, their first born, Bradley, was born and then three years later, Scott was born. These two sons have been the loves of their lives.
Through Bobbie Sue and Al's officership, many young men have been a part of their lives and home, one of which is Major Ed Lee who became a part of the Smith home.
Bobbie Sue, along with her husband Al, have certainly been fortunate and blessed to have spent their entire career in the Carolina Division. Their appointments over the last 45 years of ministry include Bobbie Sue serving in Charleston SC (1963), Anderson SC (1963 - 1964); and Bobbie Sue and Al serving together, Greenville SC (1967 - 1968), Lexington NC (1968 - 1970), Greenville NC (1970 - 1974), Charlotte Temple (1974 - 1977), Florence SC (1977 - 1982), Rocky Mount NC (1982 - 1986), Columbia SC (1986 - 1989), Greensboro NC (1989 - 1996), Asheville NC (1996 - 2001), and Raleigh NC (2001 - 2009).
Along with her mother, she leaves behind her devoted husband of 47 years, Major Alvin L. Smith; sons, Bradley Smith and wife Mira of Mauldin SC and Scott Smith and wife Misty of Raleigh, and Major Edward Lee and wife Amy of Atlanta GA; four grandchildren; and sister, Brenda Lowery Whitmire of Clyde NC.

Warm and loving memories of Al and Bobbie Sue. May Gods grace abound to the family and friends during this time and the years to come. I’m glad we as salvationist see this as a promotion to glory rather than a passing. Well done thy good and faithful servant enter into the joys of thy Lord.
